“It doesn’t seem like it’s been forty-four years,” Julie Lloyd tells William. “It seems like just yesterday we were in college, talking about spending forever together after we were done.”
“That was just yesterday,” William says, reaching up to softly rub her cheek. “You’re still as young and beautiful as you were then.”
“You still know how to butter a girl up,” Julie tells him. They sit together for a while in the park behind The Willow, where they had just eaten their anniversary dinner. It’s March, but the night is not too cold and so sitting outside is nice after long days working at the hospital.
They decide to feel young again and so they lay in the grass looking up at the stars. Things have changed in the world around them, but not so much that they feel out of place. William has retired and Julie knows it won’t be long before she does too.
The thought of spending days like this with William makes the idea of retirement not so bad. She promised long ago to spend the rest of her life with him, and she plans to keep on with that promise.
